Brady's Sustainable Company Strategy uses lean processes to eliminate waste, conserve energy, preserve natural resources and continuously improve safety

Brady's commitment to be a sustainable company is rooted in two important areas: reducing our overall environmental footprint and continuously improving our safety performance. The four focus areas of our "Sustainable Company Pillar" are: eliminate waste, conserve energy and reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, preserve natural resources, and continuously improve safety performance.

Accomplishments

Conserve Energy - Reduce Greenhouse Gas Emissions

• Brady switched 20% of its inter-company shipments between Milwaukee and Belgium, or two 40-foot containers per month, from air freight to sea freight. This resulted in savings of $96,000 and a 40% reduction in CO2 emissions each year. As a result of this success, inter-company shipments from Asia to Europe were also switched to sea freight at the end of 2011. SmartWay Transport Partnership

• Brady joined the U.S. EPA Smartway® program to reduce transportation-related emissions through a partnership between shippers and carriers that commit to benchmark their operations, track fuel consumption and improve their performance annually.

In Belgium and Sweden, our facilities switched to a utility provider that uses 100% renewable wind, solar and hydropower energy to generate electricity. This resulted in a reduction of GHG emissions attributable to these facilities from 66 tons of CO2e in 2010 to 1 ton of CO2e in 2011.

• A switch to energy efficient Compact Fluorescent Lights (CFLs) in our Zele, Belgium office helped us to reduce our electricity consumption by 25%.

Eliminate Waste

Implementation of a comprehensive Print Management program at all Brady facilities in the U.S. is reducing the amount of paper, toner, and electricity consumed, reducing the number of toner cartridges sent to landfills, and reducing the cost of office printing.  Estimated cost savings are $500,000 over the next 5 years.

• Significantly reduced our waste by optimizing the layout pattern of products and reusing our process waste. In fiscal 2011, material yield improvements at the design phase in Brady's Chinese facilities resulted in an estimated waste reduction of 300,000 pounds.

Preserve Natural Resources

• Implemented regular meter reading and water conservation efforts at our Xiamen China facility. These efforts have reduced water consumption at the site by 25%, conserving 200 cubic meters of water annually.

• Replacement of tap water filters with filters that have flow controls has resulted in an estimated 20% reduction in water consumption at our facility in Langfang, China.

Direct Marketing operations in the UK has launched a pilot initiative called "PureSafety" which sells exclusively on-line without the use of paper catalogs. Brady's North American direct marketing business is also growing its e-commerce/ digital presence to provide customers with an online option for purchasing.

• Stopped the practice of printing and mailing Annual Reports to all Brady shareholders. By adopting the Securities and Exchange Commission's "Notice and Access" model, shareholders now access the company's Form 10-K on-line and Brady conserves up to one-half million sheets of paper annually.

Improve Safety

Safety scoreboard tracks days worked without accident• Brady has seen a continuous decline in our total incidence rate since 2007.  In 2011, the global safety incidence rate decreased to an average of 0.94 recordable injuries per 100 employees.

• Other notable accomplishments:

       - 59% of Brady's operating units did not have a recordable injury in 2011.
       - 5 year accident rate reduction of 41%.
       - 10 year accident rate reduction of 78% based on 2012 year-to-date.
       - 67% of operating units registered an incidence rate below 1.2.
