The focus of Brady's Sustainable Company efforts are to improve our environmental footprint in the communities where we live and work by leveraging the organization's focus on lean manufacturing principles.  Through a concerted effort to eliminate waste in all facets of the organization we aspire to reach our long-term vision of "zero waste to landfill" for both our manufacturing operations and office locations.

Accomplishments

Conserve Energy - Reduce Green House Gas Emissions

SmartWay Transport Partnership• Brady joined the U.S. EPA Smartway® program to reduce transportation-related emissions through a partnership between shippers and carriers that commit to benchmark their operations, track fuel consumption and improve their performance annually.

• Installation of a new VSD compressor optimized heating and cooling resulting in a 37% reduction in natural gas consumption while improved lighting yielded a 25% reduction in in electricity usage in Zele, Belgium

Brady's Egelsbach, Germany, facility uses geothermal heating & cooling• Installation of a new geothermic heating/cooling system in Egelsbach, Germany resulted in a 20% reduction in electricity consumption

• Installation of an updated blower system at the Somerset, New Jersey facility is providing $250,000 in annual cost savings

• Changed utility provider in Sweden allowing a switch to 100% renewable energy sources (including wind and hydro) resulting in the reduction of CO2 emissions from 60 metric tonnes to 1 metric tonnes

Eliminate Waste

Material coating in Penang, Malaysia• Material coating set-up reduction through process mapping, standard work and six sigma resulted in 1.8 million yards of waste reduced at the source translating into an average annual cost savings of $500,000

With print management, documents that aren't retreived are automatically deleted rather than wasting paperImplementation of a comprehensive Print Management program at all US facilities is reducing the amount of paper, toner, and electricity consumed, reducing the number of toner cartridges sent to landfills, and reducing the cost of office printing.  Estimated cost savings are $500,000 over the next 5 years.

• Reduced cardboard consumption by 14% at the Zele, Belgium facility

• In Fiscal 2011 more than 50% of cost savings were realized from material yield improvement which resulted in over $5 million in savings.

Improve Safety

Safety scoreboard tracks days worked without accident• In 2011 the global safety incidence rate decreased to an average of 1.2 vs. the blended industry average of 3.3

• Surpassed 1500 days without an injury at the Langfang, China plant

• 59% of Brady’s operating units did not have a recordable injury in calendar 2011 (through August).

• 67% of operating units register an incidence rate below 1.2

Preserve Natural Resources

Seton U.K. Catalog• Direct Marketing operations in the UK has reduced paper thickness, started using recycled paper and has off-set carbon footprint through planting trees in its catalog marketing operations

• Replacement of filters with flow controls in water taps has resulted in a 20% reduction in water consumption at Langfang, China
